Synopsis

Journal of a Sad Hermaphrodite is the product of two interwoven narratives: that of Cooper, English teacher at a secondary school in a small Oxfordshire town, and one of his pupils, a girl who is never named. Cooper has spliced the girl's diary with his own thoughts, and with some favourite pieces of poetry and prose: Robert Louis Stevenson, Wilfred Owen, Horace, and others.

Through this innovative technique the Journal narrates an eventful school year, as Cooper attempts to reflect on love, life and literature and often his own failure at all three.
